As middle and high school teacher I will do my best in and out of the classroom for my students. There are several aspects to this.
I plan to model my behavior to what they should be learning rather than just telling them what to do. This includes using the scientific method and other educational teaching practices as well as respect for others. In modeling the behaviors I expect in the classroom I hope to teach by example, and by using them outside of the classroom as well hopefully they will learn that they can take what they learn in class and apply it outside of it as well.
In presenting information and ideas in the classroom I hope to create interesting, dynamic, fun learning environment that keeps the students interested not only in the topic but in learning in general. I hope to open their minds and encourage them to question the world around them.
As the students are part of the world and not just the small part of it I will be teaching in, I will strive to link my classroom to the world around them. In doing this I hope to create a connection not only to their natural world but also to the interconnectedness shared by all those living here. In doing this the students should see that each choice we make effects others and vice-versa.
The students I will be teaching are people themselves and constantly growing and changing. I need to be aware of this and that they have other needs outside of education that I could meet. I will strive to listen to what they have to say and treat it with respect. I will provide support in and outside of the classroom or try to make a connection for them to find someone else who can provide the support they need. As my knowledge is limited I hope to be able to provide them with sources to find out answers to the many questions they have by referring them to other people, resources, or information.
As a future teacher I realize that things are not perfect. I hope to be able to adapt and make changes for individual students or even the whole class as needed. I will strive to stay current on new ideas and concept in my own and the teaching field. I also hope to keep an open mind and be able to use the resources around me (co-workers, bosses, friends, students, family, students parents, ect.) to find new ideas as you never know where they will come from.
Version 2
As a middle and high school teacher I will do my best in and out of the classroom for my students. I want to provide them with an example of how to achieve what they want in life as well as how to go through life with respect for others and the world around them. There are several aspects to achieving this.
I plan to model my behavior to what they should be learning rather than just telling them what to do. This includes using the scientific method and other educational teaching practices everyday in the classroom. Through my own use of the questioning, hypothesizing, testing/trying, and then assessing the outcome of various events the students should come to understand that the scientific process can be applied not only to science but to many other aspects of life decision making and learning. Through my respectful treatment of students, colleagues, and the world around me, in and out of the classroom, the students will learn how it feels to be treated with respect and see the type of environment that is fostered through respecting others. In modeling these behaviors in the classroom I hope to teach by example. I also hope to encourage the students to take these behaviors out of the classroom as well. This will not only aid in building them up into considerate members of society but should help teach them that what they learn in school or any classroom can be taken and applied to other aspect of their lives.
In presenting information and ideas in the classroom I hope to create an interesting, dynamic, fun learning environment that keeps the students interested not only in the topic but in learning in general. By utilizing and encouraging their own curiosity to question the world around them I can keep their interest. I will find out each students areas of interest through probing questions at the start of, and throughout, my time with them. I hope to encourage the students to come to me with questions and problems so that I can aid them in the process of discovering and problem solving. By doing this for any question asked of me I will respond to the best of my ability. So the students will then develop a process to solve any problem or answer any question posed to them. To get them to look at the world around them through new eyes I plan to present them with anomalies and curious examples that they may not be able to explain without learning more. By doing this for each topic I present to them it will help open their minds and encourage them to question the world around them. This will give me a means by which to guide them through scientific discovery and learning so that it is interesting for the students.
As all students are part of the world, and not just the small part of it, I will strive to link my classroom to the world around them. I can connect events that are currently occurring to topics in class that we have or are discussing and learning about. By utilizing technological resources such as news feeds from around the world, and journal articles available online to the students, they can have a current up to date concept of the world they live in. I hope to not only connect to the broader world but to their own community’s events and concerns, especially in this movement of Go Green. In doing this I hope to create a connection not only to the natural world but also to the interconnectedness shared by all those living in the world. While they may not understand how an ocean current affects the livelihood of fishermen, or the change in temperature in a country affects its food supply, I hope for them to understand the interconnectedness of all things when they leave my class. In doing this the students should see that each choice we make effects others and vice-versa and how they really can make a difference in the world.
By building a classroom of respect and inquiry and hope to have the students understand that any question or problem can be solved or worked on with the right aids.
As a future teacher I realize that things are not perfect. My classroom will not always run smoothly no matter my planning or fore thought. I hope to be able to adapt and make changes for individual students or even the whole class as needed. Some of these adaptations can be built into my classroom ahead of time for particular situations. Extra work, activities, and assignments to add into extra time will be present in my unit planning. Unique modifications for individual students are something I hope to plan into units with the aid of special education teachers and other information sources to the students benefit. I will strive to stay current on new ideas and concept in my own scientific field and the teaching field. This should give me the most current thoughts and concepts which I can bring into my classroom to my students benefit. I also hope to keep an open mind and be able to use the resources around me (co-workers, bosses, friends, students, family, students, parents) to find new ideas, as you never know where they will come from. An open-minded attitude will also help me deal with any issues that arise in a calm rationale manner that should not harm anyone.
The aspects of my classroom that I discussed here are the most important ones to me. I have found this out from both a teaching and learning perspective. As a student, always as life is a constant learning process, I have found respect, open-mindedness, curiosity, logical thought, and understanding of the world to be the most important building blocks. As I grew up being a role model not only for my younger sister, but for other scouts, and then the children I worked with at camp, these aspects also aided in working in a congenial, friendly manner with them. While discipline is a necessary aspect of any learning environment, with a foundation of respect it comes more naturally for both parties to work together. Then you can discipline your own and they begin to discipline their own actions rather then set up a situation where it is foe against foe. Respect and understanding mediate the gap discipline can cause in the learning process.
